Tour Guide Wisdom
The Olin Center for Physics and Chemistry’s spacious facilities hold well-equipped biochemistry, computer science, advanced physics, advanced chemistry, seismic, and instrumentation laboratory rooms. Research space is available for faculty and students, including equipment for microscopy; synthetic inorganic, organic, and bioorganic chemistry; and solid-state physics. The building also includes an observatory and a research greenhouse on the roof. The Olin Center was completed in 1979 with funds from the F.W. Olin Foundation.
In the summer of 2004, the College installed a new telescope for the observatory thanks to a grant from the Sherman Fairchild Foundation. The new telescope is professional-quality with very rigid and precise mounts, high quality optics, and an integrated telescope control system. It has an optical design that uses two hyperbolic mirrors, which is the same set-up used by many modern research telescopes including the Hubble Space Telescope.
