Percussion Ensemble Kids Concert

The Lewis & Clark College Percussion Ensemble is hosting its first Children’s Concert on November 22 at 3 pm in Evans Recital Hall. There will be 30 minutes of entertaining percussion music, dance, painting, puppets, singing, and more! Following the concert, all the kids can come on stage for a “Percussion Petting Zoo” where they can try out ALL the instruments they saw on stage! The concert is FREE, and will be entertaining to all ages!

Tuskegee Airman Lt Col Alex Jefferson

Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson, is a 93 year old retired US Air Force officer, and one of the famous “Tuskegee Airmen”, also known as the 332nd Fighter Group.During World War II, Black Americans throughout the U.S. were subject to Jim Crow laws which legalized segregation and the American military was also segregated.President Truman signed an executive order ending segregation in the military in 1948 (3 years after the war’s end).

Lt. Col. Jefferson’s book, Red Tail Captured, Red Tail Free: Memoirs of a Tuskegee Airman and POW, is a personal memoir of those who served America in World War II and after. 

Please join us for this very special opportunity. Lt Col Alexander Jefferson will speak from 7-8 p.m. in the Chapel at Lewis & Clark College. A book-signing and reception will follow. The event is free and open to the public.

Screening and Panel Discussion of Jose Antonio Vargas’ film “Documented”

In 2011, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas outed himself as an undocumented immigrant in an essay published in the TheNew York Times Magazine.

Documented chronicles his journey to America from the Philippines as a child; his journey through America as an immigration reform activist; and his journey inward as he reconnects with his mother, whom he has not seen in person in over 20 years. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion and reception.

An Evening with Bill Nye The Science Guy

Tickets for An Evening with Bill the Science Guy in the Pamplin Sports Center are now SOLD OUT. A free simulcast of An Evening with Bill Nye the Science Guy will be shown in the Agnes Flanagan Chapel. Tickets are not required for the simulcast.

Bill Nye — scientist, engineer, comedian, author, and inventor—will bring his special brand of pop culture science literacy to Portland on Saturday, October 25 at 7 p.m. at the Pamplin Sports Center at Lewis & Clark, 0615 SW Palatine Hill Road. The event is open to public; doors open at 6 p.m.

At the event, Nye will delve into his early history, the importance of science education, and inspiring others to change the world through it. Nye has worked to make science entertaining and accessible for most of his life. He initially discovered a talent for tutoring in high school, and spent afternoons and summers demystifying math for his fellow students.

An Evening with Poet Marilyn Chin

Marilyn Chin (陈美玲) is a prominent Chinese American poet and writer, an activist and feminist, an editor and Professor of English. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Portland, Oregon, her books have become Asian American classics and are taught in classrooms all over the world.  Marilyn Chin’s work is a frequent subject of academic research and literary criticism. She has read her poetry at the Library of Congress. In addition to teaching in the MFA program at San Diego State University, she serves as a mentor on the international faculty of the City University of Hong Kong’s low-residency MFA program, the first of its kind in Asia. Portland Chamber Orchestra: “Strings Attached”

The Portland Chamber Orchestra starts its 2014/15 season with a very musically diverse all strings program entitled “Strings Attached” featuring Pianist Chad Heltzel and Percussionist Brett EE Paschal (Director of Bands and Percussion Studies at Lewis & Clark). Works range from Baroque to modern and features brilliant and accomplished soloists.

OMSI and Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) are teaming up to bring Science Friday to the museum’s Empirical Theater for a lively evening of science news and entertainment in front of a live audience. A veteran NPR science correspondent and award-winning journalist, host Ira Flatow will discuss current science topics with local experts—including Associate Professor of Biology Greta Binford—and will welcome audience participation with Q&A opportunities.

During graduate school commencement on June 1 at the Pamplin Sports Center, students completing graduate-level programs in 2014 will receive their degrees. As is the graduate school’s tradition, the ceremony will feature a procession with a bagpiper, remarks from Dean Scott Fletcher, and a student and faculty speaker.

Resonance Ensemble: “Northern Light”

Resonance presents “Northern Light” on May 17 at 7:30 pm in the Agnes Flanagan Chapel at Lewis & Clark College. The program includes new music from the Pacific Northwest and Scandinavia exploring the beauty and spiritual connection of the natural world and will feature a commission by local composer Renée Favand-See and works by Cascadia Composers. General Admission for this event is $22 and student tickets are $11. Portland Chamber Orchestra presents “Pictures at an Exhibition”

The concert presents two new and vibrant interpretations of the renowned Mussorgsky composition, led by two world class conductors.

The first half, conducted by Maestro Yaacov Bergman, presents a version of Pictures at an Exhibition for chamber orchestra by Julian Yu that invokes musical color found only in chamber music. 

The second half, led by Israeli conductor and composer Yaron Gottfried, is a version for jazz trio and chamber orchestra. The melodies and themes of Mussorgsky’s original version are dressed in new colors and inspire new forms for the jazz trio to improvise.

The 2014 Baccalaureate Celebration features over 30 seniors participating!  Our theme is “Embracing Change Through Lenses of Diversity” and the keynote speaker is Ombudsperson Valerie White.  Jazz music, a cappella singing, a vocal solo, readings and prayers in many languages and from many traditions will all be a part of this inclusive and inspirational celebration.  Everyone is invited to this event that is planned by and for seniors! The Lewis and Clark Wind Symphony, Brass Choir and Percussion Ensemble join together to present a Spring showcase concert Thursday, April 24 at 7:30 pm in the Evans Auditorium. The program will featuring music of Gustav Holst, Samuel Hazo, Frank Ticheli and Alfred Reed, in addition to music by Northwest composers David Jarvis and Jeffrey Peyton, and music for brass choir by Tomasi and G. Lewis & Clark Music Faculty member Josh Feinberg presents an exciting sitar recital on April 18 at 7:30 pm in Evans Auditorium. The program features Josh playing sitar along with rising-star tabla player Aditya Kalyanpur. Aditya-bhai is a senior disciple of Ust. Alla Rakha and Ust. Zakir Hussein, and has been a well-known tabla player in India since his television debut at 7 years old. Tickets for this concert will be available for purchase at the door: $20 general admission, $15 students.
