  • News Image

Alumna Sandra Sunrising Osawa (Makah), a producer and independent filmmaker, returns to Lewis & Clark College for two special events in honor of Native American and Alaskan Native Heritage Month.

In her work, Osawa explores media as means for the Native American community “to tell our own stories.” Osawa became the first Native American filmmaker to produce a one-hour documentary for network television, and she was honored as the “Native American Filmmaker of the Year” at the 1996 Taos Talking Pictures Film Festival. Osawa works with her husband, Yasu, and they have produced documentaries about treaty rights, contemporary Indian artists, and other critically acclaimed works.
