"Students must learn mathematics with understanding, actively building new knowledge from experience and prior knowledge...Learning math with understanding is essential to enable students to solve the new kinds of problems they will inevitably face in the future" (NCTM Standards, 2000) It is the teacher's role to prepare all students to be mathematically literate. Through examination of both math content and instructional strategies, teachers learn to engage students in mathematics and guide students to solve complex problems. "
