John Holzwarth teaches political theory, approaching the discipline both historically, through courses that explore the great political philosophers from ancient Greece to the present, and normatively, through courses centered on major debates about democratic theory and political ethics in the modern world. His current research explores the value of cultural attachments as an existential phenomenon, with particular emphasis on the writings of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche. Other recent writings focus on Rousseau, Emerson, and issues of religious conscience in liberal society. He is a graduate of Colgate University (A.B. 1993) and Princeton University (M.A. 2000, Ph.D. 2004).
