Scholarships and Grants
The Graduate School is committed to recruiting and retaining a diverse student body that incorporates multiple perspectives, cultures, learning styles and ways of knowing. Awarded by individual departments, the scholarships are intended to further this goal by offering financial assistance to prospective and continuing students who need financial support to pursue their graduate education and who meet each scholarship’s eligibility requirements. Scholarship awards and application processes vary per program.
In order to be considered for need-based Lewis & Clark College Graduate School Scholarships, it is important to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon after January 1 as possible and by February 15, 2009 for priority scholarship consideration. You can submit the FAFSA online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. The Lewis & Clark College school code is 003197.
All students who apply for admission and file a FAFSA will be considered for the maximum loans and scholarships available. Timely completion of the program application is strongly recommended. Program appliction materials may be used to select scholarship recipients unless otherwise noted.
Counseling Psychology Scholarships
Diversity Scholarship Fund
Established by members of the Counseling Psychology (CPSY) department, this scholarship is awarded to a continuing student in a CPSY degree program. Individuals who are members of a currently or historically under-represented racial or ethnic group, or individuals who have demonstrated significant commitment to serving racially or ethnically diverse populations are eligible and are invited to apply.
Kurkinen Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Dorothy Kurkinen for a current students “who are getting their degrees after a lengthy hiatus.” Her goal was to help students attain advanced education, despite the complications of adult life in a complex world.
Gloria M. Lopez-Davis Scholarship
Gloria M. Lopez-Davis, a past graduate of the program (who was a struggling single parent at the time), generously provided this scholarship for a current student in good standing in the School Psychology program who is a single parent or student presently experiencing financial hardship.

School Counseling Scholarships
The School Counseling program offers several scholarships of varying amounts to Individuals who are from ethnic minority background and/or have demonstrated significant commitment to serving diverse populations. Facility in a second language is desirable and financial need is considered. Students admitted to the program are invited to apply.
Teacher Education: M.A.T. Preservice Scholarships
Scholarships for new M.A.T. preservice students do not require separate application. Faculty will review admissions applications and recommend applicants for specific scholarships. Financial need as determined by a student's FAFSA information will be considered when awarding scholarships.
Far West Fibers, Inc. Math/Science Scholarship
Awarded to a student who intends to teach Math or Science at the Middle or High School level. Candidates should have a record of committed and service to low income, recently immigrated, Spanish-speaking communities in the U.S. and is fluent in both English and Spanish.
Helen E. Holt Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to one student admitted to the M.A.T. preservice program who demonstrates an intention to serve diverse student populations, possess a strong academic background and shows potential as a future teacher.
Mary Stuart Rogers Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to M.A.T. preservice students whose outstanding academic achievements are complemented by qualities of leadership, dedication, integrity, compassion, sensitivity, and self-discipline.
Carol D. Dimich Memorial Scholarship
Awarded annually to a current nontraditional M.A.T. preservice student, this scholarship was established in memory of Carol D. Dimich who was a graduate student in education at Lewis & Clark at the time of her death. Application information is distributed to current students during the Fall semester.
Partnership for Diversity Scholarship: Lewis & Clark/Catlin Gabel School
Scholarships are awarded to two M.A.T. preservice students accepted into the Early Childhood/Elementary program. Individuals who are members of a currently or historically under-represented racial or thenic group, or indivuals who have demonstrated significant commitment to serving racially or enthically diverse student populations are eligible. Students interested in this program should contact the Teacher Education office (lcteach@lclark.edu).
Teacher Education Diversity Scholarships
These scholarships address the critical need for increasing ethnic diversity and a strong commitment to serving diverse student populations within the Northwest. Individuals accepted into the M.A.T. preservice program who are from ethnic minority backgrounds and/or who have demonstrated significant commitment to serving diverse student populations are eligible for consideration.

External Scholarships
Lewis & Clark's Student Financial Services web site includes information about external scholarship opportunities. In addition, they offer a list serve which will notify you of different scholarships opportunities every month.
Federal TEACH Grant
The Federal TEACH Grant provides up to $4000 per year for students intending to teach in teacher shortage fields (Math, Science, Foreign Language, Bilingual education, English language acquisition, Special education, Reading Specialist) at low income schools. Upon accepting a Federal TEACH Grant, students incur a service obligation to teach full-time for 4 years in a teacher shortage field at a low-income school. Students who fail to fulfill their service obligation will see their Federal TEACH Grant converted to a Federal Unsubsidized Direct loan with interest accrued from the point the grant was initially disbursed.
Preservice MAT students in the Math, Science, and Foreigh Language cohorts as well as inservice MAT/MEd students in ESOL, Math, and Special Education are eligible to apply for the Federal TEACH Grant. Students in other cohorts whose career plan would allow them to fulfill the required service obligation may petition to participate.
