Admissions Expectations
Lewis & Clark looks for applicants with a background in the liberal arts such as Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Fine Arts.
Mathematics and Science Competency
All applicants to the M.A.T. with Initial Teaching License: Early Childhood/Elementary program must exhibit competency in mathematics and science. Competency in mathematics and science must include grades of "C" or better in 100 level or above college courses, at least one course with a math prefix and another with a science prefix. Courses outside of these areas such as psychology statistics or economics are not counted towards this requirement. An AP score of 5.0 in mathematics or calculus will fulfill the mathematics portion of this requirement. If you do not have a 100 level mathematics or science course in your undergraduate experience, you must successfully complete such a course at a community college or a four year college before being officially admitted to the program. Successfully passing the Mathematics section of a basic skills or general knowledge test (PRAXIS I, CBEST, West-B, CSET, ORELA, GRE) does not fulfill the mathematics competency requirement.
Classroom Experience
Candidates for admission must have a history of work, either volunteer or paid, with children in grades K-6. This experience must occur in school settings such as a public or private school, state licensed charter, or other school serving students in these grades. For admissions purposes, teaching swimming, music or dance lessons, coaching youth, working as a nanny, or as a private tutor are not accepted as approved classroom experience with children. Applicants are required to submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher who has observed the classroom work. See Letter of Recommendation requirement below.
