Using Native Cases to Promote Student Learning

For the past five years the Enduring Legacies Project at The Evergreen State College has been developing Native Case Studies around contemporary issues in Indian Country. This interactive, interdisciplinary teaching and learning approach has been enormously successful with students and faculty. The unique Native perspective presented in well-researched reality-based cases offers opportunities for cross-cultural learning and a greater understanding and awareness of Indian issues. Case teaching is an engaging method that can be adapted to any target group of students at any education level. Through role play, debate, group discussion, and collaboration students develop critical thinking and analysis abilities as well as problem-solving and decision-making skills. This workshop will introduce participants to the case study approach and the resources in Enduring Legacies Native Cases Initiative. Participants will participate in several case discussions that will model a variety of learning strategies, and learn how to use these cases in their classrooms or for professional development.
