On Saturday, April 5, 2008, two Lewis and Clark law students claimed victories at the 2008 National Animal Advocacy Legislative Lobbying and Drafting Competition at the George Washington University School of Law.
The students drafted legislation to strengthen provisions of the Animal Welfare Act, most of which pertained to puppy mills. In addition, they were required to author a fact sheet to persuade legislators to support their bills. The students presented their proposed legislation to three legislators with varying backgrounds and political leanings before progressing to the final round with yet another legislator.
Paula Walker, 3L, took first place in the competition, beating out students from schools such as Temple and Vermont.
Kristen Monsell, 2L, progressed to the final round, and took home the award for Best Bill and Best Fact Sheet .
Animal Law Clinical Professor Jami Pannell coached both students in preparation for the competition.
