Professional Background

Susanna Cowen joined the National Crime Victim Law Institute (NCVLI) as a staff attorney and clinical faculty member in March 2008. Prior to joining NCVLI, Ms. Cowen worked as a litigation associate in New York, at the law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP. Her practice at Paul, Weiss involved general commercial litigation, as well as the representation of pro bono clients in the areas of employment, voting rights, and immigration law. Ms. Cowen first became interested in criminal justice issues while at the University of Chicago Law School, where she participated in the clinical program of the MacArthur Justice Center, a non-profit public interest law firm dedicated to criminal justice reform. As a law student, Ms. Cowen was also an intern for the Illinois Office of the State Appellate Defender, the Editor-in-Chief of The University of Chicago Legal Forum, and a research assistant for the Chicago Project on Animal Research Treatment Principles.
