$1.6M Settlement in Stormwater Case

On Earth Day 2009, Northwest Environmental Defense Center, a student group and nonprofit organization based at Lewis & Clark Law School, once again grabbed headlines for a creative, proactive settlement with a large industrial polluter. Schnitzer Steel, a metal recycling facility in North Portland, agreed to improve its facility’s system for preventing polluted stormwater runoff into the Willamette River. The company will spend an estimated $1.6 million on upgrades, and make additional contributions of $90,000 to help fund a federal stormwater study and $10,000 to the National Waterkeeper Alliance.
