LA 614 Reading Comprehension
This course offers in-depth exploration of current models and trends in reading comprehension and its cognitive and linguistic components. Students will read widely from professional journals, explore and reflect on their personal reading processes, and do theoretical and practical projects to further their understanding.
Course content examines factors that contribute to reading difficulty (from early childhood through adulthood), as well as important issues and questions about standardized tests, observational diagnostics, readability formulas, and the effectiveness and theoretical validity of published programs.

About the Instructor
Teaching and learning are adventures. Tools, skills, and knowledge are helpful if the adventures are to be fun and successful. I have attempted to collect these throughout my teaching career in an effort to be the best teacher I can for my students. My adventures began at Willamette University, where I earned my masters degree in elementary education. After a couple of years of some character-building preschool and substitute teaching, I moved to Nuiqsut, a small Inupiat village in Alaska, where I taught high school with my husband. I then moved with my family to teach in Gladstone, Oregon. In Gladstone, I have continued to refine my teaching skills as I have taught fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. In 2005, I became a Nationally Board Certified teacher and in 2007 earned a reading endorsement through Lewis & Clark College. I continue to pursue new skills and challenges as my adventure in education continues.
