(OWP) Writing for Publication

This course is part of a series for Oregon Writing Project (OWP) Summer Invitational Institute graduates interested in becoming writing coaches in schools/districts.
The course will give teachers time out from the hectic pace of classroom life to reflect on their practice, discuss their research on writing and learning, as they address local and national concerns about teaching writing.
Teachers will write narratives of school/teaching life, articles about theory and practice grounded in classroom lessons, and opinion pieces about issues in the teaching of writing, intended for a variety of publications.
Course is limited to 15 participants. The first class is a three-day writing retreat at Menucha Conference and Retreat Center In Corbett, OR. OWP will cover the cost of double-occupancy rooms and meals. Participants are responsible for tuition and travel.
Pre-requisite: OWP 4-Week Invitational Summer Institute, plus Advanced OWP and Teacher Research.
Dates: Friday-Sunday, January 11-13, 2013 and Saturdays February 23, March 9, April 27 and May 11, 2013
Times: Friday, January 11: 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., Saturday, January 12: 9 a.m. – 9 p.m., Sunday, January 13: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Degree-applicable credit: ED 597, 3 semester hours, $2,319
Continuing education credit: CEED 897, 3 semester hours, $1,050
Some districts, like PPS, accept this credit for lateral movement on a salary schedule, while TSPC accepts these clock hours for CPUs.

About the Instructor
Linda Christensen, M. Ed. has been involved in the Oregon Writing Project (OWP) since her first National Writing Project Summer Institute in 1980. An often requested keynote speaker at educator conferences nationally and internationally, Linda has taught and/or provided literacy coaching in public schools for over 30 years, including seven years as the PPS district language arts specialist, and regularly provides professional development in writing across the curriculum for regional schools. Linda is a social justice activist, leader, and author for Rethinking Schools, a national grassroots teacher reform organization, and author of two books: Reading, Writing and Rising Up and Teaching for Joy and Justice.
