Education, Racial Inequality, and the Future of American Democracy

Education features prominently in most prescriptions for what is needed to address the economic and social challenges confronting American society. However, our policy makers and most of the reforms that have been promoted in recent years have failed to address one of the most significant obstacles confronting American society: the persistent increase in social inequality.
Rather than fostering equity and development, schools tend to reproduce the existing opportunity structure and patterns of privilege. For low-income students of color who rely on schools for access to opportunity, this tendency contributes to the perception that schools and education are not viable means for improving ones’ life. It need not be this way.
In this presentation Dr. Noguera will describe how schools can be transformed to counter social and racial inequality to promote mobility and community development. The presentation will focus upon four interrelated strategies:
1) Holistic education: Strategies for integrating health and other social services into schools so that the basic needs of children are addressed
2) Education for empowerment: Strategies for engaging students and parents as partners in the educational process to improve academic outcomes and insure accountability
3) Education for economic and social development: Strategies that link learning to community development needs
4) Education for creativity and the development of intellectual potential: Creating educational institutions that foster problem solving, curiosity and critical thinking through the use of technology and experiential learning
Drawing upon many years of research in schools throughout the United States and recent experience in developing new educational models in cities such as New York, Port of Spain, Trinidad, the Eastern Cape of South Africa and Oakland, California, this presentation will consider how similar models can be developed and applied elsewhere.

About the Presenter
Pedro A. Noguera, Ph.D. is the 2013 Graduate School of Education and Counseling commencement speaker. Dr. Noguera is the Peter L. Agnew Professor of Education at New York University and his scholarship and research focus on the ways in which schools are influenced by socialand economic conditions in the urban environment. He has published over one hundred and fifty research articles, monographs and research reports on topics such as urban school reform, conditions that promote student achievement, youth violence, the potential impact of school choice and vouchers on urban public schools, and race and ethnic relations in American society. Dr. Noguera appears as a regular commentator on educational issues on CNN, National Public Radio, and other national news outlets. Read more about his work here
