Benefit Concert & Film Screening of “Komora: To Heal”

This one hour benefit concert features music and dance by  Martin Zarzar of Pink Martini and his mother, Luciana Proaño, Peruvian dancer and artist  who is dedicated to multidisciplinary and cross cultural work.

Born in Lima, Peru, and raised in South America, Europe, and the USA, Martin Zarzar is a multi-instrumentalist, song writer, and producer who lives in Portland, Oregon. His work includes over 10 years with Pink Martini. As an accomplished solo artist, Martin recently released “Two Dollars to Ride the Train” which earned him two nominations in the 12th Independent Music Awards. Zarzar has collaborated with a multitude of musicians and performers throughout his career namely Simon Shahin, Jamey Haddad, Leo Blanco, Essiet Essiet, John Butler, Al Andalus, Jorge Pardo, Michael Feinstein, Rufus Wainwright, and Dave Eggar, among others.

His music has been included in the 3-CD compilation LOUNGE 2013 presented by Istanbul, Turkey based AM&M and this May, Martin sets off on a series of live concerts across the USA and Canada, culminating in a week of performances in New York City.

We have scheduled this benefit concert for April 7, the United Nations Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Rwanda Genocide. This day commemorates the deaths of 800,000 people who were murdered during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, central Africa.

The concert will be followed at 4:30 p.m. by a complimentary reception in the Evans Auditorium lobby hosted by Academic English Studies. 

At  5 p.m., please join us in Evans Auditorium for an encore film screening of Komora: to heal, co-produced by Dallaire Scholar Emmanuel Habamina, along with Natalie Ledford, independent filmmaker and National Geographic Young Explorer.  Natalie will be joining Emmanuel for the Q/A following the screening.

About the film

Filmmaker Emmanuel Habimana was only 9 during the 1994 Rwandan genocide.  His powerful story of survival is told through the film, Komora: To Heal, a documentary co-produced by Emmanuel and Natalia Ledford, and sponsored by National Geographic.

Today Emmanuel is committed to a vision of the world filled with peace, hope and reconciliation. He was awarded the Dallaire Scholarship at Lewis & Clark College where he is currently enrolled in Academic English Studies.

Suggested ticket price for concert, reception, and film screening:  $20 public/ $10 student.   Preferred payment at the door by  cash or check (to Lewis & Clark College).  All proceeds benefit production costs of Komora: to heal.
