Dan Balmer has long been considered the finest jazz guitarist in Oregon. His recent induction into the Jazz Society of Oregon’s Hall of Fame, as its youngest member and first guitarist, is just the latest recognition of Dan’s talent as a performer, composer, and educator. In live concerts and recordings, Dan presents a unique blend of contemporary and traditional jazz styles, juxtaposed with influences ranging from pop to Brazilian music

Following a multi-year, highly productive collaboration with Tom Grant’s internationally known jazz group in the 1980’s, Dan became a well-known leader in his own right, releasing seven recordings that gained national praise and recognition. Dan has performed with almost every Northwest jazz artist of note, and his guitar sound is represented on over 70 CDs. In 1993, Dan was named Lewis & Clark College’s Outstanding Young Alumnus, a significant honor from his alma mater recognizing his contributions to the field of jazz.

Currently, Dan leads his ever popular group, The Dan Balmer Trio, as well as his new cooperative band, Go By Train. He is also a member of Portland’s most popular jazz bands, The Mel Brown B-3 Organ Quartet, The Mel Brown Quartet, and the David Friesen Quintet. As a composer, Dan’s works have been popular on radio and have been used in films, television, commercials, and even choreographed by the Oregon Ballet Theater. Recently, he has been commissioned to write a piece for the new music ensemble, Third Angle. In addition to his own CDs, Dan has licensed original music for movies, television shows, and commercials. Also well known as an education, Dan teaches master classes up and down the West Coast, from Alaska to California, and internationally in Spain and Canada.

Dan returns “home” to Lewis & Clark College, where he has been an adjunct instructor of jazz guitar for 20 years. New York jazz virtuoso Gary Versace, performing on Hammond organ , also joins the Jazz Band for this performance along with Downbeat’s #1 rising drummer, Matt Wilson. You don’t want to miss this performance! Come early!

Lewis & Clark Jazz Night is free and open to the general public.
