The Global Law Program is proud to welcome the Spring 2012 Global Law Lecturer, Professor Anita Ramasastry, D. Wayne & Anne Gittinger Professor of Law at the University of Washington Law School. Professor Ramasastry will speak to faculty, students and the community on The Future of Corporate Liability for Human Rights Violations in the United States: Kiobel, the Ruggie Framework and other Emerging Trends.

A reception will follow at 6:30 p.m. in the Wood Hall Foyer. Contact Heather McCambly at hmccambly@lclark.edu with questions or to RSVP.

Attendees will be granted 1 General MCLE Credit.

The subject is extremely topical, in light of a recent surge in human rights litigation against corporations in U.S. courts, and the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent grant of a petition for a writ of certiorari in one of those cases - a development that promises to resolve the fundamental question of whether a corporation (rather than an individual or a government) can be liable for violations of international law.  The case in question, Kiobel, arises from alleged complicity by a multinational oil company in human rights violations by the Nigerian government aimed at suppressing opposition by local communities to the company’s operations. Professor Ramasastry will discuss key legal issues surrounding such cases, as well as other recent developments that bear on the potential liability of U.S. corporations for human rights violations.

Professor Ramasastry joined the faculty at the University of Washington in 1996. Her current research focuses on the accountability of economic actors in conflict and weak governance zones. During 2008, she was a Fulbright Scholar and visiting professor at the Irish Center for Human Rights - NUI Galway. As of 2011, Professor Ramasastry is a senior advisor in the International Trade Administration at the US Dept. of Commerce as part of the Obama administration
