After training greyhounds\, w orking in hayfields and wheat fields\, and attending Bartlesville high sc hool\, he earned degrees from the University of Tulsa\, from Oxford (on R hodes scholarship)\, and his PhD from Yale. He is married with four chi ldren and is professor emeritus of English at Washington University in St . Louis. His scholarly work has been in medieval English literature (man uscripts\, patrons\, social contexts)\, linguistics\, and American Indian literature.
