You don't eat just once every few days. You don't speak just every week or so. Learning is continuous\, and hung er is closer to breathing than to an annual rite. So why not write daily? In this workshop\, we will feed on examples from the daily writing of Wi lliam Stafford\, and practice in the spirit of his work. \;
T he emphasis will be on the process of creation: creating texts the length of poems but for use in multiple genres. The goal will be to know what i t feels like—in the body and in acts of sustaining witness—to practic e the continuous writing life you have imagined.

Ooligan contacted local teachers and offered them lesson plans base
d on Stafford's poems that would help inspire middle and high school stud
ents to create their own essays and poems. They then collected submission
s throughout the 2012-2013 school year\, began compiling the best work du
ring the summer of 2013\, and will publish the students' pieces as a coll
ection entitled "We Belong In History" \;by January 2014\, coinciding
with the yearlong celebration of Stafford's birth.
The stud
ents will get the chance to see their very own work in print\, their teac
hers will enjoy seeing them get inspired\, and the graduate students at O
oligan Press will be awarded the task of compiling the students' never-be
fore-seen poems and essays into a book. The competition is a unique way t
o celebrate Stafford\, who considered reading and teaching to be essentia
l parts of human life.

Join Lewis &\; Clark Professors Jerr y Harp and Cari Coe for this viewing of the film based on the journals of William Stafford\, a conscientious objector in World War Two and Nationa l Book Award winner. Despite being told that war is inevitable\, Stafford disagreed. He saw war as a choice - a human choice - and only one of the ways nations can respond to conflict. Using Stafford's eloquent poetry a nd prose\, the film invites the viewer to reflect on their own ideas rega rding war and how individual witness can contribute to a more peaceful wo rld.
