Coffee and cookies will be served. \; Federali sm and the Tug of War Within The Constitution's dual sovereignty directi ves foster an ideal set of good governance values—checks and balances\, accountability\, local autonomy\, and problem-solving synergy—that are nevertheless in constant competition. This inherent "tug of war" is resp onsible for epic instability in the Supreme Court's federalism jurisprude nce\, but it is poorly understood.Federalism and the Tug of War Within ex plores how constitutional interpreters reconcile the competing values tha t underpin American federalism\, with real consequences for governance th at requires local and national collaboration. Drawing examples from Hurri cane Katrina\, climate governance\, health reform\, and other problems of jurisdictional overlap\, author Erin Ryan demonstrates how faulty federa lism theory can inhibit effective interjurisdictional governance by faili ng to navigate the tensions within federalism itself. With new conceptua l vocabulary to wrestle with old constitutional dilemmas\, Ryan traces th e development of federalism's tug of war\, and proposes innovations to be tter focus judicial\, legislative\, and executive efforts across all leve ls of government.Professor Erin Ryan teaches federalism\, negotiation\, a nd natural resources\, property\, and water law at Lewis &\; Clark Law School. \; She has presented on federalism theory at academic and ad ministrative venues in the United States\, Europe\, and Asia\, including the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference\, the U.S. Department of Agricultur e\, and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research. \; Sh e spent 2011-12 in China as a Fulbright Scholar\, where she taught Americ an law\, studied Chinese multilevel governance\, and lectured widely. 0\; Ryan is a graduate of Harvard Law School\, where she was an editor of the Harvard Law Review and a Hewlett Fellow at the Harvard Negotiation R esearch Project. \; \; X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:Join the Lewis &\; Clark Bookstore i n celebrating the release of Federalism and the Tug of War Within written by Erin Ryan\, Associate Professor of Law. Johnson will discuss his new book\, Darwin's Dice\, with time for questions and dialogue.
In Darwin's Dice (Oxford U.P.)\, Johnson examines the idea of chance in the thought o f Charles Darwin and the "implications of Darwin's views for religion\, f ree will\, and moral theory." At Darwin's time of writing his observation s of evolution\, he was under pressure to depoliticize his argument–fro m the reading public along with the scientific community–yet was unwill ing to undermine or change his ideas. Through the "lens of randomness" Jo hnson investigates this tension\, offering "a new way to look at Darwinis t thought." Sound fascinating? Join us to learn more!

Bennet t will speak about her book\, with an opportunity for questions and dialo gue.
The Civic Imagination (Paradigm Press) documents a "collective ethnographic study of civic culture\," following "a year in the lives of activists striving to make their city a better place." With a style and methodology that is relatable to a range of readers\, Bennett and her co-authors explore "complex relations between citizens and their democracy\, skepticism and engagement\, and inequality and activism." As a result of their work\, where they expected to find a sense of cynicism and political disengagement\, Bennett and her team instead found individ uals with a far more nuanced relationship to the political system.
What does it mean to these "tremendously hopeful citizens" to make a difference in political life? How do these activists approach Ame rican politics? What must be their focus\, and\, conversely\, what must b e ignored?
