Graduating senior exemplifies job market preparedness thanks to liberal arts experience

Like so many of his fellow graduates, Jonah Geil-Neufeld ’11 explored a wide range of academic and extracurricular experiences that have equipped him with skills and work experience for his job search after graduation.

Jonah Geil-Neufeld’s four years at Lewis & Clark didn’t go exactly as he had imagined. When he arrived in the fall of 2007, he had a scholarship to study trombone and a plan to pursue a sociology major. This spring, Geil-Neufeld will graduate with a degree in Hispanic studies and hands-on experience in web communications.

Like so many of his fellow graduates, Geil-Neufeld explored a wide range of academic and extracurricular experiences that have equipped him with skills and work experience for his job search after graduation.

From his studies in the music and foreign language departments to his work-study position as a website assistant, Geil-Neufeld capitalized on the opportunities Lewis & Clark offered him—and those he found on his own. In this video, he discusses how his Lewis & Clark experience evolved, the faculty support he received along the way, and what he hopes to do next.

About Commencement 2011

On May 8, Geil-Neufeld will join his peers in the class of 2011 at the 139th commencement ceremony of Lewis & Clark College. Approximately 440 students will earn degrees during the 2010-11 academic year.

New York Times correspondent and author Timothy Egan will deliver the commencement address. Egan began his career as a reporter for the Times, and his beat was his native West. On assignment, he covered the Exxon Valdez oil spill, the collapse of small-town American in the Great Plains, and the O.J. Simpson trial. After leaving the Times as a reporter, he moved back to Seattle and published six books. His book The Worst Hard Times won the National Book Award in 2006.

Aukeem Ballard ’11, who was selected as senior speaker, will deliver an address on behalf of the graduates.
