Campus welcomes new students and families

On Wednesday, August 24, beginning at 8 a.m., students and parents will start arriving on the undergraduate campus for New Student Orientation and Parents Preview.

“This is always an exciting time at the College and we hope you will join us in enthusiastically welcoming students and parents alike into our community,” said Sandi Bottemiller, director of housing and orientation. “Josh Francis, the student director of New Student Orientation, and I have been working hard this summer to put together a great orientation program for our 687 new students and their parents.”

New Student Orientation introduces new students to the academic programs of the institution, helps acquaint them with the campus environment and many members of the community, and provides a variety of social programs for them to meet their classmates.

Nearly 1,000 parents have registered for the program, a record number of participants.

“Our hope is that during their brief visit here, parents and family members of our incoming students will garner a new understanding of the institution and the opportunities and services available to their sons and daughters, and will leave campus convinced that this is exactly the right place for their child,” Bottemilller said.

Given the large number of campus visitors on Wednesday and Thursday, traffic to Palatine Hill and parking on campus will be very challenging. Please consider alternate transportation on these two busy days. Here are some suggestions:

  • Ride the Pioneer Express Shuttle (service begins 8/22)
  • Ride your bike to work
  • Carpool
  • Have a family member bring you to campus

If you do bring a car on campus on August 24, please leave the spaces around Templeton and the residence halls open. Convocation will take place on August 25, so please leave spaces around Griswold Stadium open that day.

NSO Student Leaders will be visiting offices on Monday and Tuesday, August 22 and 23, to distribute final copies of the Orientation and Parents Preview schedules. Preview the New Student Orientation and Parents Preview schedules online.

“Please don’t forget to wear your gold nametag beginning Wednesday, August 24,” Bottemiller said. “Thank you for your continued support of these important programs.”
