Faculty-student research assistantship initiative announced

President Glassner is making funds available from the Strategic Initiative Fund to faculty members in all three schools to employ students as research assistants during the academic year 2011/2012.

Committed to recognizing and supporting the important scholarship undertaken by Lewis & Clark faculty, and the invaluable opportunities that research experiences provide for students, President Glassner is making funds available from the Strategic Initiative Fund to faculty members in all three schools to employ students as research assistants during the academic year 2011/2012.

The aim of this initiative is twofold: to support faculty research and creative activity, and to give greater numbers of students on all three campuses the experience of collaborative research or creative work.

Under the terms of the program, faculty members may have funds to compensate currently matriculating students to perform research-related duties, ranging from gathering research materials to co-authoring or co-creating the final product of a scholarly or creative project. The key requirement is that students be involved in a clearly identified scholarly or creative project and perform tasks the researcher or artist would ordinarily undertake.

“I am excited to be able to provide resources for my faculty colleagues and our students to collaborate on research and creative projects,” Glassner said. “As a faculty member, I know how difficult it can be to find the time and resources necessary to do meaningful scholarship during the academic year.”
