Operation Nightwatch declares, “Three cheers for Lewis & Clark students!”

Lewis & Clark students meet Operation Nightwatch’s need for volunteers.
Operation Nightwatch is a hospitality center downtown that aims to meet the physical and social needs of Portland’s homeless population. The Center for Career and Community Engagement sends volunteers to Operation Nightwatch weekly and their staff is very appreciative. The following piece appeared in the September 19th issue of their “Volunteer E-News” and highlights the great work our students are doing!
If you are interested in volunteering at Operation Nightwatch with other Lewis & Clark students, contact Dale Forrister (dforrister@lclark.edu). To read the entire “Volunteer E-news,” click here.

Three Cheers for Lewis & Clark!

lewis and clark logoWe’re referring to the college here, not the explorers (although they were undoubtedly fine folks, too).

The reason for the cheers is that at the beginning of last week, we didn’t have enough volunteers signed up to open the downtown Hospitality Center on either Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. But on Tuesday evening, we made a Nightwatch presentation on the L&C campus, and like the cavalry charging to the rescue, L&C students came out on all three nights to save our bacon. (And as The New Yorker would say about that last sentence, “Block That Metaphor!”)

In fact, L&C volunteers have signed up to serve at the Hospitality Center for several weeks into the future, eliminating the need to beg for others to fill slots to keep our doors open.

But that’s not to say we still don’t have slots available on most nights. If you’d like to come down and join the Thursday/Friday/Saturday night party, feel free to sign up!
