Season off to impressive start for Pioneer athletes

The football team’s stunning start to the season tops off recent athletics successes.

After its 31-28 homecoming victory over Puget Sound on Saturday, the Lewis & Clark football team stands at 6-0—the first Pioneer team since the 1963 edition to win its first six games, and the first since 1966 to win its first three Northwest Conference games.

As reported in the Portland Tribune, quarterback Keith Welch ’14 led the Pioneers offense, rushing for 142 yards and four touchdowns. Wide receiver Shawn Evans had 12 catches for 171 yards.

The Pioneer football players are not the only student-athletes experiencing big success in intercollegiate competition this fall. The volleyball team, which has defeated three nationally ranked opponents this season, won at George Fox and Pacific over the weekend to run its winning streak to six games. Jennifer Dowdy ’13 led the Pioneers with 14 kills and 10 digs, while Brigitte Russo ’15 finished with 11 kills.

The women’s cross country team, meanwhile, is ranked 18th in the country in Division III heading into the conference championships this coming weekend.
