Annual MLK celebration is a full week observance

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration at Lewis & Clark is an annual celebration honoring the legacy of Dr. King and the impact he has made on those who carry the torch for peace, justice, and humanity. 

Beginning Monday, January 16th, you are invited to participate in a series of events, including the MLK Day of Service, the Civil Rights Walk in the Gregg Pavilion, a celebratory evening of song and reflection, and a lecture series featuring faculty from CAS, Law and Grad. Revisit the portraits, words, images, and songs that encapsulate Dr. King’s enduring and transformative message that continue to inspire us today. 

The commemoration includes the following events: 

Monday, January 16

MLK Day of Service

Nine colleges and universities will bring together 1,200 students to serve, honor Dr. King, and explore education as a civil right in Portland.

9am, Roosevelt High School

Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration*

Readings from Dr. King’s speeches and a candlelight vigil. Gospel by Northeast Community Fellowship Foursquare Church Praise Team

7pm, Agnes Flanagan Chapel

Tuesday, January 17 

MLK Lecture with Dyan Watson, Assistant Professor of Education* 

“Talking Back to Educational Inequalities: A Letter From a Black Mom to Her Son”

7pm, Gregg Pavilion

Wednesday, January 18 

MLK Lecture with Monica Miller, Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellow *

“Dreams, Nightmares, & ImPossibilities: The holla  in the hope  of Black Religion”

Thursday, January 19

MLK Lecture with Stephen Manning, Law Faculty, Immigrant Law Group, PC *
