Celebrate AmeriCorps Week March 10-18

Celebrate AmeriCorps Week March 10-18 by recognizing the extraordinary commitment of AmeriCorps Retention Project Member Gabe Montes de Oca on campus

Lewis & Clark College is hosting an AmeriCorps Member through the Retention Project to build the capacity of campus mentoring programs.

The Lewis & Clark Intercultural Network for Connecting Students (LINCS), a peer mentor program, connects new students with a support system to help them navigate life on campus. LINCS focuses on diversity, retention, and, most importantly, ensuring students are successful during their first year of college and beyond.

To support student success, Lewis & Clark has partnered with Oregon Campus Compact (ORCC) to host Gabe Montes de Oca as an AmeriCorps Member. Gabe is the Retention Coordinator in the Office of Student Transitions & Experiences. He’s implementing a program that helps incoming students of different cultural backgrounds adjust to life at Lewis & Clark by pairing them with successful student leaders. LINCS provides opportunities for new students to connect with resources on campus, explore the campus and Portland community, and develop relationships with Lewis & Clark faculty, staff, and returning students.

Gabe Montes de Oca graduated with a degree in mathematics from Lewis & Clark. He’s passionate about the LINCS mentoring program to support the success and retention of minority students on campus. When asked about this year he said, “I hope to make a difference in the lives of the students I work with, and to create a program that has the structure to continue thriving and serving students in the future.”

Campus and community impact since August 2011:

  • Recruited and trained 12 mentors who have mentored 630 hours.
  • Matched 90 at risk college students with college mentors.
