Jane T. Nishida served as the secretary of the environment for the state of Maryland from 1995 to 2002. Nishida was responsible for all aspects of environmental protection, including air pollution, water quality, waste management, and emergency response. During the 2001 anthrax scare, she was responsible for the emergency testing of mailroom facilities in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., areas and for overseeing the safe transport of anthrax-contaminated waste material to Fort Detrick, Maryland.

Cited for her leadership in the protection of the environment, Nishida has served on the boards of numerous state, national, and international environmental organizations. She now works for PADCO, an international consulting company headquartered in Washington, D.C., that provides development solutions for the twenty-first century and advises countries around the world on developmental and environmental issues.

Born in Bethesda, Maryland, Nishida graduated from Lewis & Clark College with a degree in international affairs and earned a JD from Georgetown University Law Center. She resides in Potomac, Maryland, and has family in Portland and Seattle.
