History professor hosts tour of Portland’s multicultural past
September 12, 2012
Even Portland natives will get a fresh perspective on the city’s multicultural and immigrant past when Reiko Hillyer, assistant professor with term of history, hosts a walking tour of the Old Town/Chinatown neighborhood.
The tour, organized by the Dill Pickle Club, illustrates the challenges faced by Portland’s ethnic communities, as well as their many contributions to the city’s economy, industry, and culture. Topics covered include Portland’s first African American community, Japan Town, and Chinatown. The event will focus on urban development in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Named Undergraduate Teacher of the Year in 2009, Hillyer is known for taking teaching outside of the classroom. Last fall, she led an Inside Out course held at the Columbia River Correctional Facility.
