1970

Bruce Beal ’70, JD ’75 is in private practice as a corporate attorney in Dana Point, California. He maintains a website, a legal blog, and a personal blog. He has written a “future historical thriller” novel, titled Proteus, available from Amazon.

 

Sherry Allanson Grove ’70 lives in Cottage Grove, where she is a homemaker and is active in the Democratic Party. She married Gary Grove in 1972, and they have one daughter, Elizabeth.

 

Diane Rocky Holck ’70 is retired and living on the big island of Hawaii.

 

Bruce Lamott ’70 has left the Carmel Bach Festival, where he was choral director, lecturer, mission concert conductor, and past education director. He was also a founder of the Virginia Best Adams Fellowship. He began his 30-year association with the festival as rehearsal accompanist and harpsichordist.

 

Shelby Day Speas ’70 is vice president of ambulatory services for Mills-Peninsula Health Services in California, where she developed a breast center that serves 26,000 women each year. A member of the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame, she’s an active public speaker and community service volunteer. She has been married for 22 years.

Alexander “Lex” Holland ’71 teaches accounting part time at Metro State College in Denver. He retired from the U.S. Department of Education in 1996.

 

Charles Lewis ’71 is a self-employed writer and painter living in California.

 

Patrick Nielson ’71 is a member of the board of directors of Masisa and of Forestal Terranova. Both are Chilean public companies involved in forestry.

 

Elizabeth “Betsy” Ramsey ’71 is president of the Oregon branch of the International Dyslexia Association. She is a governor appointee to the Oregon Advisory Council for Special Education and has served on other committees including the Oregon 21st Century Schools Council.

 

Janvier “Jan” Slick ’71 was promoted to manager of family-based services at the Oregon Department of Human Services. A licensed clinical social worker, she holds two master’s degrees: one in juvenile corrections from the University of Oregon and the other in social work from Portland State University.

 

1972

Cynthia “Cindy” Barban Bauleke ’72 has served as pastor of the same church for 17 years and recently completed a doctorate in ministry from San Francisco Theological Seminary. Her dissertation was titled Living Into Inclusion: Identifying the Importance of Intentional Welcome of Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual People Into the Church. She and her husband, Ron, have been married for 30 years and have two grown children.

 

1973

Judith “Judy” Aiello ’73 created the greeting card company Aiello Fotografia in 2001. Cards feature images of architectural details, as well as her pastel paintings and close-ups of fruits and vegetables.

 

Ronald “Ron” Atwood ’73 has practiced law in Portland since 1978, representing employers in workers’ compensation cases in Oregon, Washington, and Montana, and under the Longshore and Harborworkers’ compensation Act. He enjoys wine tasting, hiking, and mountain climbing.

 

Byron Chatfield JD ’73, an attorney with the Oregon Department of Justice, has accepted an appointment as chief counsel of the DOJ’s Criminal Justice Division.

 

Jon Hill MAT ’73 is superintendent of Oregon’s Douglas Education Service District. He previously was superintendent of the Lake Education Service District in Oregon’s Lake County.

 

Ellen Kittell ’73 has written more than 11 articles and one monograph, and has edited two collections. She appears in the 1996 Who’s Who of American Teachers.

 

John Maynard ’73 was ordained as a United Presbyterian Church minister in 1981 and moved to Australia that same year. He is now a minister in the Uniting Church in Bunyip, Victoria. He and his wife, Helen, have four daughters, ages 11 to 17.

 

Calvin “Cal” McDermid ’73 became the Sherman County Historical Society museum director in January 2003. He chairs the Sherman County Committee of the Oregon Cultural Trust.

 

Linda McMullin ’73 retired to Wyoming after more than 16 years at a community college in California. However, she came out of retirement to teach English as a second language after learning that there are only a few people in Wyoming certified to do so.

 

J.P. “Sandy” Ogilvy JD ’73 received the Pincus Award from the Association of American Law Schools in honor of his outstanding contributions to clinical legal education. Ogilvy organized a major externship conference held at Catholic University of America, an event attracting more than 125 participants from 75 law schools.

 

William Perman ’73, a professor of radiological physics at St. Louis University School of Medicine, teaches residents and researches in applied magnetic resonance imaging. He currently has a grant to perform sodium-23 MRIs of breast cancer.

 

1974

Thomas Gerber JD ’74, formerly a partner at Dunn Carney Allen Higgens & Tongue, has joined the business and litigation groups at the Portland office of Bullivant Houser Bailey.

 

Kelly Hayes ’74 is second vice president for group administration at Standard Insurance. His wife, Helen, works at Lewis & Clark’s Graduate School of education. They have two children.

 

Stephen Kantor JD ’74 has been elected chair of the board of directors for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon and Southwest Washington.

 

Carol Kuhl ’74 is working toward a B.F.A. in graphic design. She is also training in aikido and doing some watercolor painting in her limited free time.

 

Janet Metzger ’74 is an associate professor of communication at the new School of Communication and Media at Palm Beach Atlantic University.

 

1975

Pamela Brainin Boyer ’75 is operating manager for the Westlake Farmer’s Market in Austin, Texas. She started the market in 1996, having previously run companies specializing in fresh juices, organic produce, and farm tours and grower consultation.

 

Susan Devine-Lazo ’75 is completing courses for a teaching credential at Azusa Pacific University and contemplating earning a master’s in education as well.

 

Darrann Durham ’75 donated a kidney to an old friend in 2002. She was back to work in a month, and her friend has never felt better.

 

James “Jim” Hudak ’75 is a pianist, singer, and guitarist who has been performing and composing music for more than 25 years. He released his third CD, Solo Piano, on his independent record label, Brainstorm Records (www.jhudak.com).

 

Mark Johnson ’75 chairs the governor-appointed Alaska Regulatory commission. Previously an attorney and business analyst for United Utilities in Anchorage, Johnson has also served in the Alaska Legislature and worked for former Anchorage mayor Tom Fink and U.S. representative Don Young. Johnson holds a law degree from the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law.

 

John Rieke ’75 and his wife, Gene Robertson ’78,celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. Rieke is a professor of radiation oncology at the University of washington Medical School. He practices medicine at Overlake Hospital Cancer Center in Bellevue. They have two teenage daughters.

 

1976

Betsy Matheus Bowman ’76 directs the Utility Treatment Laboratory for water and wastewater analysis in Yuma, Arizona.

 

Brian Gavin ’76 joined the Glendale, Arizona, staff of U.S. Representative Trent Franks in May 2003. He previously worked for U.S. representative JD Hayworth in Scottsdale, Arizona, and served on the staff of former U.S. Senator Bob Packwood in Portland, and on Pat Buchanan’s presidential campaign in McLean, Virginia. He earned his JD from Whittier College School of Law.

 

Stephanie Zito ’76 is a cellist with the Utica symphony Orchestra, binghamton Philharmonic, and Catskill Symphony Orchestra in New York state. She plays baritone horn with the Oneonta Band. A former full-time K-12 music teacher in New York City, she earned her master’s in music education from Columbia University Teachers College and the Julliard School.

 

1977

Yoko Natori Gulde ’77 is board director of the Portland-Sapporo Sister City association through the Japan America Society of Oregon.

 

Linda Heydon ’77 lives in San Carlos, California, with her husband, John Nance. They married in 2001.

 

Paul Mattson ’77 and his wife, Michelle, have four children, Keith, Paul, Greg, and Julia.

 

1978

Stacey Mudrow Holeman ’78 recently completed a master’s degree program, and she and her family took a monthlong trip to Central America to celebrate. They visited son Carlos’ native Guatemala for the first time since his adoption in 1989. Stacey is married to Mike Holeman ’79.Daughter Mariah is a junior at Lewis & Clark.

 

John Mueller ’78 teaches band and orchestra at Incline Middle School in Incline Village, Nevada. In May 2003, his concert band, string orchestra, and jazz band received gold ratings and placed first in their divisions at San Francisco’s heritage Music Festival. His school also won the festival’s instrumental sweepstakes trophy.

 

Gene Robertson ’78 is a medical physics consultant for hospitals in the Seattle area. In 2003, she and her husband,John Rieke ’75, celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. They have two teenage daughters.

 

James “Jim” Robertson ’78 became a partner in the international law firm of Sidley, Austin, Brown & Wood in July 2003. He has practiced law at the firm for eight years in Los Angeles and Tokyo, and currently lives in Tokyo with his wife and two teenage daughters.

 

Donna Roisom ’78, MA ’85 coaches tennis at Valley Catholic School in Beaverton. The Oregon Athletic Coaches Association named her Oregon’s 3A Boys Tennis Coach of the Year in 2002, and the National Federation of State High School Coaches Association selected her as 2002 Northwest Sectional Coach of the Year for boys’ tennis.

 

Mark Rosenbaum ’78 is managing partner of Rosenbaum Financial and cochair of Oregon Mentors, a nonprofit organization working to expand quality mentoring in the state. He also serves on the board of Tuality Community Hospital.

 

MardiLyn Saathoff ’78, MAT ’83, JD ’90 is general counselor to Oregon’s governor. She previously held posts as senior legal counsel for Tektronix and as supervising attorney, assistant attorney general for the state of Oregon.

 

Timothy Shelmerdine ’78, MAT ’83 completed his 24th year teaching Spanish and German last spring and currently teaches at Lake Oswego’s Lakeridge High School. He wrote about the brewer’s blackbird, yellowheaded blackbird, and lark sparrow for the book Birds of Oregon: A General Reference,published in June 2003.

 

Robert Tobiassen JD ’78 has been appointed chief counsel of the federal Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau. This governmental unit was established under the Homeland Security Act of 2002.

 

1979

Kim Vanden Berg McClung ’79 received her national board certification from the National Board for professional Teaching Standards in 2002 for adolescent and young adult English language arts. She teaches ninth grade English at an inner-city school in the Seattle area, and says she loves every minute of it.

 

Jeff Kingston Pierce ’79, an author of five nonfiction books and an editor in Seattle, is working on his first novel, set in early 20th-century Los Angeles.
