1952

Pat Hibbard ’52 and his wife, Gayle, bumped into Art Holmboe’54, MD, and his wife,Sallyann Parks Holmboe ’55, on a beach in Maui, Hawaii, in April. Pat and Art were Lambda fraternity brothers and hadn’t seen each other since 1952. “It took fate 53 years to put us both on the island of Maui at the same resort at exactly the same time,” writes Pat. Sallyann says Pat’s T-shirt provided a necessary clue: It was imprinted with “Lewis & Clark College Athletics.” Pat is a member of the College’s Board of Alumni and chair of the board of directors of the Albany Society.

1955

Patricia Watson Davey ’55 lives in Roswell, New Mexico, and recently completed a children’s poem and a short story series. Her poems have been published in several magazines and periodicals, including New Mexico Magazine, Prospero’s Cell, Cellar Door, Cedar Rock, Mid-American Review, Assay, St. Anthony Messenger, and the Oregonian. Her stories have appeared in Venture Inwardand NEXUS Magazine, and her art is included in two books by Diane Tessman. “As a published poet,” she writes, “I have been grateful for all I learned at Lewis & Clark.”

Kenneth Owens ’55 and his wife, Sally Fitzgerald Owens ’57, retired from the faculty at California State University at Sacramento and now divide their time between Sacramento and the Puget Sound region. When not enjoying the art of fly fishing—or writing about its history in the West—Kenneth continues his collaborative research with Alexander Petrov of Moscow State University. Their project, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, focuses on Alexander Baranov and the formation of Russia’s North American empire. Dave Lomax ’56, M.MEd ’60 has retired from Portland Public Schools as a band director and now resides in a retirement home, where his friends and neighbors call him a “computer guru.” David is the father of Neil Lomax, former NFL quarterback, and grandfather of Nick Lomax, Lake Oswego High School senior.

Mary Margaret “Peggy” Jakku Swafford ’56 retired from the Oregon Symphony this season after 40 years with the orchestra. She was a string teacher in the Beaverton School District for 26 years; an associate professor of music at Portland State University; a past president of the Oregon Viola Society; a composer and arranger of music for quartet and trio; and a cofounder of the Tapestry String Quartet. Peggy and her husband, Hal Swafford ’55, MAT ’75, plan to spend more time with their three grandchildren, even as they continue advocating for music in the schools.

Betty Bloomquist Thompson ’56, MD, is being honored by the department of anesthesiology at Oregon Health & Science University’s School of Medicine for her many years of teaching. The department has established the Betty Thompson Award to recognize a resident in anesthesiology who excels in teaching medical students. The award was first given last year, and Thompson will present the award to its recipient this year. Thompson retired from OHSU as professor of anesthesiology in 1991, after 27 years.
