Looking for a way to serve the community during spring semester? We are proud to offer three different ongoing volunteer opportunities in education.

Open Meadow

Open Meadow seeks to aid high school freshmen and sophomores that are falling behind in their education, not connecting with the Portland Public School system, and have been deemed “high risk” of dropping out. Your involvement as an after-school tutor and mentor will give these students a more personalized, engaging, and fun educational experience, and will help them catch up and get ahead in their classes thus encouraging them to stay in school. Program takes place on Thursdays from 2:30-6pm. For inquiries contact Mimi at mngokion@lclark.edu

SMART - Start Making a Reader Today

This opportunity is full. Email akmoore@lclark.edu to be placed on the waiting list.

SMART is an amazing program dedicated to working with PreK-3rd graders to foster an excitement and love of reading. Lewis & Clark volunteers help elementary students gain confidence in their reading ability by contributing an hour every Tuesday to one-on-one read-aloud sessions. Volunteers will have access to a 3CE van and volunteer from 1:30-3:30 every Tuesday. If you are interested in becoming a SMART volunteer email Alexa (akmoore@lclark.edu) or stop by the Center for Career and Community Engagement.

Beach Tutoring

Beach Elementary Tutoring is an opportunity to work with second and third grade students struggling with English or Spanish reading at Beach Elementary School in NE Portland. Volunteer tutors receive training in Read Aloud, Guided Reading and Reading Games from faculty at Lewis & Clark College. The program is part of a study to measure the effectiveness of this type of after school program. Transportation will be provided and volunteers will tutor every Wednesday from 3:20-4:30 (plus travel time). If you are interested in becoming a Beach Elementary tutor email Alexa at akmoore@lclark.edu.

Please feel free to stop by 3CE in Albany 206 or email service@lclark.edu if you have any questions or would like to learn more about these opportunities.
