IELP: Int’l Environmental Law Project 755-S1 Canceled

February 07, 2013

IELP trains students to work with governments, non-governmental organizations, and international institutions to develop, implement, and enforce international environmental law to tackle some of today’s most challenging global issues, including climate change, biodiversity conservation, oceans and fisheries, and trade and the environment. In this vein, students work on “live” international environmental projects, either for clients or in partnership with governments, non-governmental organizations, or international institutions. Students are expected to attend a daily classroom session to discuss both substantive and practice-related issues, meet regularly with their supervising attorney, and complete a set number of hours outside of class on their project. During the 2013 summer offering, students will focus on preparing Pacific Island governments to participate in the intersessional meeting of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). For the first two weeks of class, we will meet daily and students will be expected to complete, on average, three hours of work each day outside of class. During the second two weeks of class, students will have an opportunity to attend the UNFCCC meeting in Bonn, Germany (at the student’s expense) either as a delegate for IELP or as a delegate for a Pacific Island government. Participation in IELP is limited and must be approved by Professor Lyman prior to registration. Students seeking admittance to IELP should provide Professor Lyman their resume, transcript, cover letter, and writing sample via email (ejt@lclark.edu) by April 1, 2013. Please direct questions to ejt@lclark.edu.

Class: May 20 – 31. UNFCCC meeting: June 3-14.
