Sign up now for free CERT disaster training, classes run June 4 - 25

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training focuses on increasing the level of safety for those individuals who will be stepping forward to assist after a disaster. CERT promotes a partnership between emergency services and the community members they serve.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training focuses on increasing the level of safety for those individuals who will be stepping forward to assist after a disaster. CERT promotes a partnership between emergency services and the community members they serve.

This class is focused on preparing Lewis & Clark for disasters. The training is open to faculty, staff, and students from all three campuses. Learn more at the CERT website.

CERT Courses

June 4, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Unit 1: Disaster Preparedness & Unit 2: Fire Safety
Covers the impact of disasters on buildings, non-structural elements, infrastructure and social systems; an overview of local hazards and basic preparedness; and fire chemistry and behavior, reducing potential fire hazards, and basic fire suppression techniques.

June 11, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Unit 3: Disaster Medical Operations & Unit 4: Disaster Medical Operations
Covers treatment for life-threatening conditions; principles of triage; how to lift and carry for patient movement; head-to-toe assessments; basic first aid treatment; and establishing treatment areas.

June 18, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Unit 5: Light Search & Rescue Operations & Unit 6: CERT Organization
Cover techniques for situation size-up & rescuer safety, recognizing rescuer limitations, and victim extrication; and volunteer management, documentation, and resource allocation.

June 25, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Unit 7: Disaster Psychology, Unit 8: Terrorism and CERT, Unit 9: Course Overview, and Lockdown: Emergencies on Campus

June 26, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Final field exercise with hands on training. All students are required to participate in order to be considered “CERT Certified.”

All training will take place in Albany 218 and 220. Books are provided for class use, and training materials can be viewed online. To register, email mnisbett@lclark.edu.
