Patty Cassidy MA ’94, a leader in the field of horticultural therapy, shares her perspective in the New York Times “Ask an Expert” feature this week.
A certified master gardener, Cassidy’s work brings together mental health and wellness, education, and gardening. Her “Ask an Expert” discussion focuses on ways in which caregivers and families can make gardening more accessible and enjoyable for those who suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s.
Cassidy serves on the board of the American Horticultural Therapy Association and is president of Friends of the Portland Memory Garden. In 2011 she released The Illustrated Practical Guide to Gardening for Seniors, an interactive book focused on preserving the joy of keeping a garden.
