Why are trees coming down?

The trees in front of Pamplin, JR Howard, and BoDine were removed as part of a capital project to replace an existing sewer line that had reached the end of its useful life. Due to the location of buildings and utility tunnels in this area, this was the only feasible location for the new sewer line. For the seven trees removed, 20 new trees will be planted that include Maples, Crape Myrtles, and White Fringetree.
Wood salvaged from the cedars will be kept for future use on campus. The two Linden trees in front of JR Howard were damaged during the construction of the building and have been in poor health and in need of removal. The wood chips from these trees will be used for weed suppression throughout campus as the grounds crew continues its’ goal to be pesticide-free by January 2014.
Phase I of the sewer replacement will run from Zehntbauer to the southwest corner of Albany and involves trenching along the north side of the pedestrian sidewalk. Areas of immediate work will be fenced for safety, but access to buildings will remain throughout the project.
