Dorothy Stafford: 1916-2013

I write with the sad news that Dorothy Stafford, a beloved member of the Lewis & Clark community for more than six decades, has passed away at the age of 97.

Dear Faculty and Staff,

I write with the sad news that Dorothy Stafford, a beloved member of the Lewis & Clark community for more than six decades, has passed away at the age of 97.

It is truly poignant for the College to mark Dorothy’s passing in the year that we celebrate the birth of her husband, the late poet laureate and longtime Lewis & Clark professor William Stafford. I was delighted to have the chance to award Dorothy an honorary degree at CAS commencement last spring in recognition of all she has done for generations of students and the literary culture of our campus, region, and state.

Doug Erickson, Head of Special Collections and the William Stafford Archives at Watzek Library, has written a moving obituary article about Dorothy’s long, rich life and her unforgettable contributions to Lewis & Clark. You will find it here on the College website.

A memorial is planned for Sunday, November 3, at 3 p.m. in the Agnes Flanagan Chapel.

Lewis & Clark has lost a dear friend.

Best regards,

Barry
