New student service trips spur community engagement

Before classes begin, before New Student Orientation starts, students entering Lewis & Clark College come together for an adventure.

Participants in the Breakaway Adventures program get a head start on making friends while getting to know the Pacific Northwest. Co-sponsored by College Outdoors and the Center for Career and Community Engagement, the trips offer experiences ranging from kayaking to community service.

Two of the trips encourage students to establish connections and offer service in the Portland community. The trips—which focus on issues like hunger, poverty, and sustainable food systems—bring students together for a week of service before they begin their first year at Lewis & Clark.
