Shana Levine, currently associate athletic director at Washington and Lee University in Virginia, has been named director of physical education and athletics at Lewis & Clark.

Shana Levine, currently associate athletic director at Washington and Lee University in Virginia, has been named director of physical education and athletics at Lewis & Clark.

“Shana Levine is a fantastic choice to lead our athletic department and move our programs ahead,” said Dean of Students Anna Gonzalez, who oversees athletics as part of the Division of Student Life. “Shana has a great understanding and appreciation of the Division III philosophy, and of what it means to be a true student-athlete and excel in the classroom and cocurricular areas as well as on the fields and courts.”

Levine is a Washington and Lee graduate and holds a JD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. She currently oversees athletics facilities, recreation, and compliance at Washington and Lee, where she has been associate director since 2008. Also an assistant professor, she teaches in the women’s and gender studies program.

She will begin her tenure at Lewis & Clark by July 1.

“I am honored by the opportunity to serve as the next director of physical education and athletics at Lewis & Clark,” Levine said. “I want to thank President Glassner, Board Chair Mark Dorman, Dean Anna Gonzalez, and the members of the search committee for their confidence in me to lead the department.”

“Lewis & Clark is an institution that is firmly rooted in its academic mission and the Division III philosophy. I look forward to working with the entire Lewis & Clark community to advance the athletics program to the next level while remaining true to that mission.”

Before joining the athletic department at Washington and Lee, Levine worked for the NCAA as associate director of membership services (2006-2008) and assistant director of student-athlete reinstatement (2005-2006).

At Lewis & Clark, Levine will lead an intercollegiate athletics program that includes ten women’s and nine men’s teams, as well as the department’s wide-ranging physical education courses.

Levine’s appointment concludes a national search aided by Alden & Associates. The search committee was co-chaired by Robert Kugler, Paul S. Wright Professor of Christian Studies and director of Strategic Initiatives, and David Ellis, vice president, secretary, and general counsel. Staffing the search was retired volleyball coach Lori Jepsen.

Other members of the committee were: Tricia Brand, associate dean of student engagement; Anne Bentley, associate professor of chemistry; Adam Buchwald, associate vice president and chief technology officer; Keith Dede, associate professor of Chinese; Matt DeRosa, CAS student; Patrick Dreves, head men’s and women’s tennis coach; Juli Fulks, head women’s basketball coach; and Dell Smith, retired registrar and professor.

Gonzalez thanked Mark Pietrok for his invaluable work leading the department while he served as interim athletic director this past year. Pietrok will return to his role as senior associate athletic director when Levine starts her new position.
