In a commentary for the Wall Street Journal, President Barry Glassner shares 12 tips for successful leadership that work as well in the business world as they do in higher education.

The advice shared by Glassner and coauthor Morton Schapiro, president of Northwestern University, comes from their time in academia as well as through service on corporate boards.

Among the ideas discovered through personal experience or passed on by mentors: talk less, listen more; consult customers; use the board of trustees or directors; and don’t take things personally.

Given the busy lives of college presidents and business CEOs, Glassner and Schapiro write, it’s important for leaders to remember to take care of their health and enjoy life.

“Some presidents wonder how they can find the time to do those sorts of things. The answer is simple: Act like a president and take control of your schedule.”
