ABA National Negotiation Competition Win

Nathan Morales ’14 and Matthew Ring ’15, the 2013 ABA Law Student Negotiation Competition Region 10 first-place team, have won the national championships. The national competition was held in conjunction with the ABA Midyear Meeting in Chicago this February.
The law school has often placed well at the regional level of the competition and gone on to compete at the national level—including last year, when Morales took part in the national negotiations—but this is the first year a Lewis & Clark team has won the top honor. The team was coached by Adjunct Professor Susan Marshall.
Over 260 teams participated at the regional level of the competition. Twenty-four teams progressed to the national competition. To win, Morales and Ring competed as a team in three regional and four national negotiations. As national champions, they can expect to receive an invitation to participate in the 2014 International Negotiation Competition this summer.
A recording of the team’s final national negotiation is available through the ABA Law Student Division to assist law students preparing for future competitions.
Adjunct Professor Ashley Yorra, attorney Anil Kuruvilla, and law students Linli Pao ’14 and Alex Tinker ’14 helped the team prepare for competition. The law school is also indebted to the Oregon legal professionals who served as judges for the 2013 intraschool and regional competitions, and to Adjunct Professor Shanelle Honda ’13, administrator for the ABA Region 10 Negotiation Competition hosted by Lewis & Clark.
