Dean of Students honored for outstanding work in higher education

Dean of Students Anna Gonzalez was recently recognized for her outstanding work in higher education.

Dean of Students Anna Gonzalez was recently recognized as an outstanding member of the student affairs and higher education community by the NASPA (National Association of Student Personnel Administrators) Foundation—the leading association for the advancement, health, and sustainability of the student affairs profession.

Gonzalez is one of 12 recipients of the 2015 Pillars of the Profession award, designed to honor individuals who have served as teachers, leaders, and scholars in the field.

“I am humbled by this award and credit it to all the students I’ve worked with and continue to learn from, to my colleagues past and present who support me, and to my former supervisors who showed ultimate patience during my ‘truth to power’ moments,” said Gonzalez, who also teaches in the educational leadership program at the Lewis & Clark Graduate School of Education and Counseling.

“Student affairs is an integral part of the educational experience,” Gonzalez continued. “As the first in my family to attend a four-year college in the United States, I am honored to have the opportunity to help shape a field where experiential learning, inclusion and social justice, and an ethos of care continues to be core values of our work.”

To be eligible, the recipient must have sustained professional distinction in the higher education field; served in leadership roles in NASPA; be recognized by colleagues, friends, students, or student organizations for extraordinary service; and have made significant lifetime contributions to the higher education field.

“The men and women being recognized are true pillars upon whose work many have benefited,” Foundation Board Chair Frank Ardaiolo said. “They have all served above and beyond in the growing global world of student affairs and higher education.”

This year’s award winners will be officially honored by the foundation during the 2015 NASPA annual conference, scheduled for March 21 to 25 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
