Fellowship in the Windy City

Dr. Rishona Zimring received a Newberry Library Short Term Fellowship for Summer 2015.

Professor of English Rishona Zimring is the recipient of a one-month Short Term Fellowship from the Newberry Library in Chicago for her project, “’Architecture is Frozen Music’: Excavating Chicago’s Modernist Dance Cultures.” Dr. Zimring’s research will focus on Chicago’s role in the transatlantic cultural history of modernism and modernity, with particular attention to the evolution of modern dance as a therapeutic and social practice. The Chicago dance scene will be explored in relation to the international modern dance movement that emerged during the late 19th and early 20th century, and underscore the ways in which modern dance afforded opportunities and inspiration for women. Newberry Fellowships support scholarly research using the Newberry’s collections, and require residency in Chicago. Dr. Zimring will make use of the Newberry’s Ann Barzel Dance research collection, which includes materials pertaining to the history of 20th century dance performance in Chicago, including WPA productions and the dance featured at the 1933 Century of Progress World’s Fair.
