L&C’s Precursor to Facebook
Letters
Does anyone remember what this gentleman is proudly displaying [photo from the fall 2014 Chronicle]? It’s an early 1960s Lewis & Clark Freshman Orientation Lookbook. I transferred to Lewis & Clark from (then) Claremont Men’s College in Pomona, California, during summer 1962. This new L&C sophomore pestered Dean Hester Turner into allowing me to “borrow” Pomona College’s Lookbook idea. Dean Turner budgeted $500 for the project (as I recall 50+ years later).
Around July 1, I mailed form letters to all entering class members requesting a single passport-style photo, along with their high school name and hometown. Each day brought dozens of enthusiastic and often humorous replies. Finally, in August, I savored printer’s ink and ivory stock merging to become Lewis & Clark’s first Lookbook.
Ultimately, I published books for several more freshman classes. Right now I’m remembering how every entering class had such an abundance of fine-looking young gentlemen and beautiful young ladies.
