Animal Law in Africa

Dean Pamela Frasch and CALS International Director Natasha Dolezal return from a week of presenting and listening in Kenya & Rwanda.

Associate Dean Frasch and CALS International Animal Law Director, Natasha Dolezal, just returned from Kenya and Rwanda where they presented on animal law and legal education to faculty, deans, and law students at Strathmore Law School (Nairobi), Kenyatta, University of Nairobi, Catholic, and Riara Universities. Frasch & Dolezal also presented to the dean and faculty members from the University of Kigali Law School in Rwanda, as well as meeting with prosecutors and Rwanda’s Prosecutor General to learn more about animal law in Rwanda.

Frasch & Dolezal were invited to present on Animal Law & Education at the two-day “Eastern and Southern Africa Roundtable on Illegal Trade, Trafficking and Prosecution of Wildlife Offences” held in Mombasa, Kenya. Judges, prosecutors, and law faculty from Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, and Mozambique were part of this roundtable, as well as Animal Law LLM alum, Jim Karani, director of legal affairs for Wildlife Direct. Also present in Mombasa were other stakeholders from the International Association of Prosecutors (Denmark), Wildlife Justice Commission (The Hague), Wildlife Direct (Kenya), World Wildlife Fund (WWF - Tanzania), and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC).

We look forward to an enduring relationship with Kenya and Rwanda as we continue with our work at CALS. And we are grateful for the invitations to present and listen to the progress of animal law around the world.
