Grammy Nod to Jazz Pianist

Randy Porter, Lewis & Clark’s jazz piano instructor, was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Jazz Vocal Album for Porter Plays Porter.

The album, featuring Portland vocalist and two-time Grammy nominee Nancy King, is described as “a mix of swing, harmony, and lyrical adventure.” Tunes featuring King are interspersed with instrumental tracks performed by the Randy Porter Trio. In addition to Randy’s arrangements of Cole Porter tunes, the album includes Randy’s original song “Inside Your Mind.”

The nomination came as a surprise to many because the album is not well known outside
of the Northwest, says Porter. “I’m excited and grateful that our Portland-area efforts were recognized by the Academy—in spite of my lack of promotional abilities. Thanks to all the people who supported Porter Plays Porter with Nancy King.”

The Oregonian describes Porter as “a musician’s musician, a knowledgeable, inventive, and sophisticated player with a remarkable sense of time and gorgeous keyboard facility.”
