Lewis & Clark Jessup International Moot Court team advances to international rounds

The law school’s Jessup International Moot Court team advanced to the international rounds to be held in April.

Lewis & Clark Law School’s Jessup International Moot Court team excelled at the Rocky Mountain Regional competition in Denver, Colorado, on February 15-18, 2018, advancing to the international rounds to be held in Washington, D.C. in April.

Led by long-time coach Dagmar Butte ’91 and co-coach Spencer Wilson ’15, Lewis & Clark’s Jessup team is consistently competitive, but the performance at this year’s regionals was particularly impressive.

The team was awarded First Place Memorial and went into the elimination rounds undefeated, before scoring additional victories over teams from the University of Colorado and Cornell, losing only to Yale in a close final.  Team member Matt Small was chosen as 6th Place Oralist.  Other Lewis & Clark team members included Kelsey Peddie, Andrei Tutui and Declan McGarry.

The team will continue honing its skills in the coming weeks in anticipation of the International Rounds.

Lewis & Clark students can participate in this moot court competition for credit. The school won the national competition in 2007 and is the permanent regional host for the competition as of 2009.

Hosted by the International Law Students Association (ILSA), Jessup is the world’s largest moot court competition, with participants from over 500 law schools in more than 80 countries. The Competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice. Teams prepare oral and written pleadings arguing both the applicant and respondent positions of the case.
