Ombuds Office Celebrates 10 Years

During the past decade, Ombudsperson Valerie Craigwell White worked on 2356 cases with 3393 people.

On February 28, Lewis & Clark’s Ombuds Office celebrated its 10th anniversary.

“So there’s a decade in the rearview mirror!” Ombudsperson Valerie Craigwell White said. “The variety of cases has been dizzying in some ways, but the work almost always comes down to folks doing their best who could use a little help or an additional, confidential, perspective.”

In honor of the milestone, White will host this month’s Community Corner with a return of the popular presentation Forest Bathing on March 14. Birthday cake will be served. Please RSVP here.

The Ombuds serves as an information and communication resource, consultant, and catalyst for institutional change without disclosing confidential communications. The office is available to assist faculty, staff, students, and other community members who seek guidance in addressing the range of issues that can occur in a college community.

During the past decade, White worked on 2356 cases with 3393 people.

“In addition to listening to people who need to talk to someone about what is not working well, I can look for patterns and identify things that are systematic,” Valerie said. “Because I work autonomously, I can’t take action, but I can make recommendations. So, I look for general trends and report to the president what I’m seeing and also what I’m not seeing.”
