Julie Vorholt and Channing Dodson, instructors in Academic English Studies (AES), co-presented at Reed College on March 8, 2018, at the 25th Annual Volunteer Literacy Tutor Conference sponsored by the Portland Literacy Council (PLC). “Equity through Literacy” was this year’s theme. Workshops were presented to support tutors’ work as they educate and empower students, especially those who are non-native English speakers and/or read at or below the ninth-grade level.

Vorholt and Dodson’s 90-minute workshop, “Student-Centered Speaking Activities Boosting Fluency and Accuracy,” led attendees in experiencing the activities firsthand, as preparation to teach the activities themselves. Each activity included student learning outcomes, step-by-step procedures, and caveats and options to support tutors working with many different types of students.
