The LC Sailing team travelled to Victoria, BC on March 6th and 7th to participate in the third annual Western Canada Cup. The regatta was hosted by the University of Victoria and sailed at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club. Six teams from the NW collegiate sailing district attended the regatta, putting 12 boats on the water per division.

Sailing for Lewis and Clark were Lisa Hodges ’11, Hannah Mader ’12, Sophie Harris ’10, and Melissa Rathbun ’13. This was the first regatta sailed by an all-women’s team from LC.

The race was a fleet race with two divisions. For this type of racing each boat has 4 people, two sailing at a time in either A division or B division. The scores from each division total for the boat’s score.

Hodges and Mader finished 8th in A division and Harris and Rathbun finished 9th in B division. The team placed 9th overall in the regatta.

Saturday’s conditions were beautiful; the skies were clear, the wind was around 10 mph from the north, and the sailors had a view of the Olympic Range to the south across the harbor. After racing, the UVic team provided a yummy barbeque- a nice way to finish a day of racing. Sunday’s conditions were a bit more seasonal; the skies were overcast and the wind was 10-12 mph from the south, shifting to 5-8 mph from the east. Overall, the teams were able to sail 12 races in each division, totaling 24 finished races
